Initial ideas & thought process

When we were first given the brief by our tutor, my thoughts turned straight to a more fantasy/whimsical theme for this project, so i could use this module as an expressive one and could do totally different styles and approaches within my other two this year, this being one that allows me to explore how to take a very art orientated theme and make it work effectively within a professional game play experience while still retaining its original aesthetic integrity.

As i have just finished re-reading Terry Pratchett's book Mort, Paul Kidby naturally came to mind as he was the main artist for the book covers and has also illustrated characters from within the books as stand alone prints.

From that thought 2 other artists came to mind Brian Found for his original concepts for the Film Labyrinth and Lewis Carroll for his illustrations for the Alice in Wonderland books & poetry.

I found that from these ideas I was already over exceeding my scope for this year, if I put too many thoughts and restrictions on myself this early on it would make it allot more difficult later on and would probably impair the quality of the final products. I also was extremely wary of falling into the trap of the project being more about these particular artists styles rather than it being a base of inspiration for my own artwork and work, I wanted to keep it original and not make them pastiches of some brilliant illustrators work. Also the broader i keep the theme the more i will have to play with later on.

On a side note i think I've been drawn to this particular style for my theme as i want to see how i cope with a more fantasy style as my artwork is very safe, drawing allot of characters, it would be nice to challenge myself to think outside anatomical convention and technical drawing.
